"You're gonna need a rock and a whole lotta medicine" is a mantra that Jonny Appleseed, a young Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer, repeats to himself in this vivid and utterly compelling novel. Off the reserve and trying to find ways to live and love in the big city, Jonny becomes a cybersex worker who fetishizes himself in order to make a living.

Self-ordained as an NDN glitter princess, Jonny has one week before he must return to the "rez," and his former life, to attend the funeral of his stepfather. The next seven days are like a fevered dream: stories of love, trauma, sex, kinship, ambition, and the heartbreaking recollection of his beloved kokum (grandmother). Jonny's world is a series of breakages, appendages, and linkages--and as he goes through the motions of preparing to return home, he learns how to put together the pieces of his life.

Jonny Appleseed is a unique, shattering vision of Indigenous life, full of grit, glitter, and dreams.

Drowning in Fire

Womack, Craig S.
Published Date: 2001
ISBN: 0816521689
Page Count: 304

Josh Henneha has always been a traveler, drowning in dreams, burning with desires.

As a young boy growing up within the Muskogee Creek Nation in rural Oklahoma, Josh experiences a yearning for something he cannot tame. Quiet and skinny and shy, he feels out of place, at once inflamed and ashamed by his attraction to other boys. Driven by a need to understand himself and his history, Josh struggles to reconcile the conflicting voices he hears—from the messages of sin and scorn of the non-Indian Christian churches his parents attend in order to assimilate, to the powerful stories of his older Creek relatives, which have been the center of his upbringing, memory, and ongoing experience.

In his fevered and passionate dreams, Josh catches a glimpse of something that makes the Muskogee Creek world come alive. Lifted by his great-aunt Lucille’s tales of her own wild girlhood, Josh learns to fly back through time, to relive his people’s history, and uncover a hidden legacy of triumphs and betrayals, ceremonies and secrets he can forge into a new sense of himself.

When as a man, Josh rediscovers the boyhood friend who first stirred his desires, he realizes a transcendent love that helps take him even deeper into the Creek world he has explored all along in his imagination.

Interweaving past and present, history and story, explicit realism and dreamlike visions, Craig Womack’s Drowning in Fire explores a young man’s journey to understand his cultural and sexual identity within a framework drawn from the community of his origins. A groundbreaking and provocative coming-of-age story, Drowning in Fire is a vividly realized novel by an impressive literary talent.

Book

The Boy from the Mish

Gary Lonesborough
Published Date: 2021
ISBN: 1911679058
Page Count: 288

A funny and heart-warming queer Indigenous YA novel, set in a rural Australian community, about seventeen-year-old Jackson finding the courage to explore who he is, even if it scares him.

'I don't paint so much anymore,' I say, looking to my feet.

'Oh. Well, I got a boy who needs to do some art. You can help him out,' Aunty Pam says, like I have no say in the matter, like she didn't hear what I just said about not painting so much anymore. 'Jackson, this is Tomas. He's living with me for a little while.'

It's a hot summer, and life's going all right for Jackson and his family on the Mish. It's almost Christmas, school's out, and he's hanging with his mates, teasing the visiting tourists, avoiding the racist boys in town. Just like every year, Jackson's Aunty and annoying little cousins visit from the city - but this time a mysterious boy with a troubled past comes with them… As their friendship evolves, Jackson must confront the changing shapes of his relationships with his friends, family and community. And he must face his darkest secret - a secret he thought he'd locked away for good.

Director: Adam Garnet JonesWriter: Adam Garnet JonesStars: Andrew Martin, Jennifer Podemski, Harley LegardeSummary: Shane, an academically bright First Nations youth who recently graduated from high school, still lives on the reserve with his mother, Jackie. Especially with their house needing major repairs, they are having troubles making ends meet, with Shane needing to do most of the heavy financial lifting as Jackie is emotionally incapacitated from wallowing in her grief over the recent suicide of her daughter, Shane's sister, Destiny. Although Shane openly has long been in a relationship with Tara, he, still in the closet, has as long been in a clandestine relationship with David. Suspicions abound at least among their peers that David is gay, such rumors which do not apply to Shane. Shane wants to move to Toronto to go to school, and wants David to come with him. Shane's plan is not only to make a better life for himself, but so that he and David can live an open life together, something he knows they cannot do on the reserve. David, however, wants to stay on the reserve to enact positive change, something that Shane asserts can never happen once David comes out of the closet. With his and Jackie's financial situation, Shane doesn't have the money for the move let alone for college. Shane has to decide how far he will go to achieve his short term goal, which becomes all the more difficult with other things happening on the reserve associated to him.

Two Spirits

Movie
Two Spirits | June 21, 2009 (United States) 7.6
Director: Lydia NibleyWriter: Russell Martin, Lydia NibleySummary: Filmmaker Lydia Nibley explores the cultural context behind a tragic and senseless murder. Fred Martinez was a Navajo youth slain at the age of 16 by a man who bragged to his friends that he 'bug-smashed a fag'. But Fred was part of an honored Navajo tradition - the 'nadleeh', or 'two-spirit', who possesses a balance of masculine and feminine traits. Through telling Fred's story, Nibley reminds us of the values that America's indigenous peoples have long embraced.
