Mighty Real: A History of LGBTQ Music, 1969-2000

Barry Walters
Published Date: 2026-05-12
ISBN: 9798217059829
Page Count: 480

“An essential book for this moment.”—Rob Sheffield

The definitive history of LGBTQ music, from Stonewall to RuPaul, and its impact on culture and American life

From the underground dancefloors of the Seventies to the global charts of the Nineties, LGBTQ artists and audiences shaped music’s sound, style, and spirit. In Mighty Real, veteran journalist Barry Walters chronicles its LGBTQ history from the Velvet Underground to the 21st century’s dawn as he honors the artists who redefined gender, defied tradition, and dared to challenge sexual norms with the help of a record business that wasn’t as straight as commonly believed.

Drawing on his decades as a New York- and San Francisco-based music critic, Walters examines how LGBTQ musicians, music industry executives, and fans reshaped the mainstream. He connects the dots between David Bowie’s dazzling reinventions, Grace Jones’s androgynous glamor, Prince’s boundary-shattering sexuality, and the radical candor of the Indigo Girls to prove they’re all doing the same thing: fighting oppression.

With exuberance, insight, and encyclopedic knowledge, Walters brings to life the songs and society that filled dancefloors, bedrooms, and streets as he uncovers yesteryear’s coded LGBTQ messages that paved the way for today’s unabashedly queer hits. Mighty Real is a masterful love letter to the music that liberated generations, and it’s written in a binge-worthy, personal way that blurs distinctions between chronicle and memoir. This is the rare and revolutionary music history told to help you laugh, cry, and then rally against lingering inequality.

Shapes of Love

Shapes of Love

L. V. Peñalba
Published Date: 2026-05-19
ISBN: 1250408377
Page Count: 352

Loveless meets This Time It’s Real in this aroace story about challenging the idea that romance is the ultimate life goal and finding where you fit in when you don’t follow society’s script.

When nineteen-year-old Sasha’s first album throws her into stardom, her fans become obsessed with discovering who inspired her love songs. Except, Sasha is aroace-spec (aromantic, asexual), and she’s not interested in romance (unless it comes in the shape of a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers book or a star-crossed-lovers manga). Her music is all about her favorite love stories, not her own.

After running into Kai, her estranged best friend who she hasn’t seen in two years, pictures of them together leak, and everyone assumes he’s Sasha’s muse, the “boyfriend” who broke her heart. Pressured by her label and fearing fan backlash, Sasha agrees to a PR relationship with Kai for six months—but her sense of self is put to the ultimate test. Where does she fit in a society that equates happiness with romantic love? One where even her closest friends prioritize their partners over her?

Under the guise of their faux romance, Sasha and Kai get a chance to rebuild their platonic bond and heal the wounds of their past. But when actor Asher Grish enters the scene, threatening to shake the foundation of Sasha’s PR relationship, she finds herself at a crossroads. Either she loses herself, or her career.

L.V. Peñalba’s Shapes of Love is an unforgettable story of finding the people that feel like home—even if that home isn’t what the rest of the world expects. It's not a romance, but it's most definitely a love story.

"Shapes of Love is an honest, distinctly relatable exploration of aroace identity, the entertainment industry, and what our relationships mean to each other. I felt mortifyingly seen when Sasha admitted her songs were mostly about anime and TV ships. This book was utterly unputdownable." - Ann Zhao, author of Dear Wendy

The History of Sound

Movie
The History of Sound | 128min | September 12, 2025 (United States) 6.7
Summary: Lionel Worthing is a music prodigy from a poor Kentucky farming family, he who is able to visualize sound. Despite being orphaned at a point in his growing up, David Smith has a more privileged background under the guardianship of an uncle in Newport. Both students at a music conservatory in New England, they meet for the first time in 1917 at a bar. It is their shared love of folk music that initially brings them together, that bond eventually romantic and sexual. While the Great War separates them, they are brought together postwar when David, who works as a researcher at an Augusta, ME college, asks Lionel, who has been back at the family farm for the intervening years, to accompany him on a several month project to collect folk songs through rural New England. The question becomes what will happen with their relationship after the conclusion of the project with they only knowing what each has chose to divulge to the other in their so far limited time together regarding the other's hopes and dreams. Despite both arguably believing working on this project the happiest each has ever been, Lionel does muse about a traditional family life with a wife and children, while David has his own more hidden issues outside of their time together.

Malicious Compliance

Book

Malicious Compliance

E. M. LINDSEY
Published Date: 2024-03-14
ISBN: 9798884868892
Page Count: 132

There's nothing like an epic fall from grace.

Relationship: over.
Career: trashed.
Home: lost.

And somehow, it gets worse when I move into a run-down apartment with a neighbor who's made it his mission to make my life a living hell. Reeling from my tragic breakup, all I want to do is collect the shattered pieces of my life and put them back together in a shape I recognize, but it's hard to do that when the jerk next door is keeping me up all hours of the night.

Whatever he does with his loud woodworking tools, obnoxious nineties punk music, and his constant complaints about my working hours, sleep is now a fantasy. Where I once composed music, I now spend my nights entertaining myself with visions of revenge.

But as the war between us continues, things start to shift, and I come to realize our lives might not be that different after all. Where I once loathed the sound of him singing Sex Pistols and using his table saw, now I've come to crave it. And I'm starting to think that maybe a faceless stranger I've never met might be the key to finding the man I'd lost the day I met my ex.

I'm not sure if the universe has any kindness in mind, but maybe during the holidays, I'll find my way to hope.

Malicious Compliance is the first in a slow-burn, holiday romantic MM duet featuring enemy neighbors to lovers, the merits of the DIY punk scene, a series of bad dates, and an eventual steamy happily ever after. It is book 1 of the Loose Lips Sink Ships duet, ending in a small cliffhanger. Books must be read in order.
